What I've painted so far following Rose Datoc Dall's free online class.

I don't know if I ever told you this, but I LOVE Rose Datoc Dall's paintings. I've been following her work for some years now, and her art just speaks to my heart. In April of last year she taught a painting course at Southern Virginia University. She streamed two of the classes of the course live and free on YouTube. They are great classes and last about three hours each. So I decided that one day I was going to sit through the classes with brush in hand and paint along with her. Well... it only took me a year ;), but I finally sat down and painted along with her last night (thank you, Internet!). No se si alguna vez les conte esto, pero ME ENCANTAN las pinturas de Rose Datoc Dall. He estado siguiendo su trabajo desde hace algunos años y su arte realmente me llena el alma! En abril del año pasado ella enseno un curso de pintura en la Universidad de Southern Virginia. Lo bueno es que filmaron dos de las clases del curso y las pusieron en YouTube en vivo y gratuitamente. Son clases muy buenas y duran como tres horas cada una. Entonces decidi que algun dia me sentaria con pincel en mano a mirarlas y a pintar con ella. Bueno... solo me llevo un año lograrlo ;), pero ayer finalmente me sente a pintar con ella por medio del internet. Ahora les muestro algunas fotos de mi aventura!

 And so you know... I struggled quite a bit with the face! I kept wiping out areas with a paper towel and starting over again.

Y para que sepan... me re costo pintar la cara! Tuve que borrar ciertas partes con una toalla de papel y comenzar de nuevo varias veces.

And that's as far as I've gotten on it. She says she paints the eyes at the very end (and I'm grateful she does this, since I obviously need to fix a couple of things about those eyes!) I still have one more hour to go on the class. I LOVE how I can get back to it whenever I can (and it may be a while, although I really hope I can paint again soon!) This was PURE joy to me. Her painting technique is very direct and fast. She draws the figure with brown and gets to start with colors right away. Her style is not realistic, and she is very clear about that as she teaches and paints, but it's a beautiful and unique one. I loved following her explanations and choice of colors. It has open a ton of possibilities for me that I didn't know about before, especially when it comes to painting skin. Instead of mixing a bunch of colors beforehand, she uses a basic skin tone and adds on layers of color (wet on wet) as she goes.

Y hasta aqui llegue. Ella dice que pinta los ojos al final (y yo agradecida por esa tecnica ya que, obviamente, tengo mas de una cosita que arreglare a los ojos que pinte!) Me queda una hora mas de esta clase. Me ENCANTA el hecho de que puedo volver a retomarla cuando pueda (y puede que me lleve algun tiempito, aunque realmente espero poder pintar de nuevo pronto!) Esta clase realmente me dio PURO gozo. Su tecnica de pintura es bien directa y rapida. Dibuja la figura con marron y empieza a usar los colores ahi nomas. Su estilo no es realista, y ella es bien clara en cuanto a esto cuando ensena y pinta, pero es uno hermoso y unico. Disfrute mucho de escuchar sus explicaciones y sus decisiones en cuanto a los colores. Me ha abierto la mente a un monton de posibilidades que no conocia, especialmente en cuanto a pintar los tonos de la piel. En vez de mezclar un monton de tonos antes de pintar, ella usa un tono basico para toda la piel y agrega capas de color (mojado sobre mojado o "alla prima") mientras pinta.

Hello People! I can finally show you how the La Boca painting is doing. She's doing pretty well, actually! Well, I finished it last night. It was a fun painting. Biggest canvas I've ever dealt with. It felt like child's play... and it looks like it, too. That's why I like it. Fun and colorful. It's going on the wall of my entryway as a big and happy "WELCOME"!

Hola gente! Finalmente puedo mostrarles como va la pintura del barrio La Boca. Va bien! La termine anoche. Fue divertido pintarla y es la mas grande que jamas he hecho (vendria a ser de 60 x 60 cm). Me senti como cuando dibujaba de nina, y se ve asi tambien! Por eso me gusta. Es divertida y colorida. La voy a colgar en la pared de la entrada de mi casa a manera de BIENVENIDA!

This is from the day when I painted the light post (I guess it's better to paint something here and there than to wait until I have a large chunk of time to make a ton of progress in a painting!). I think the light post is my favorite part of this painting!

Estas fotos son del dia que pude pintar el farol (me doy cuenta que es mejor pintar algun detallito aqui y alli antes de esperar a tener un monton de tiempo para avanzar mucho en una pintura!). Me parece que el farol es lo que mas me gusta de esta pintura! 

 This is from last night, when I finally added the red benches and the art stand.
Y esta foto es de anoche, cuando finalmente pude pintar los bancos rojos y el stand de arte.

Now I need to grab a ladder and get some nails on that wall to hang this painting up. I also need to clean our entryway, since it's full of shoes with sand and salt (some of Wisconsin staples in the winter), hats, coats... and all those things that I've been postponing to do so I could paint! :)

Ahora tengo que ir a agarrar una escalera para poner unos clavos sobre la pared donde la voy a colgar. Tambien necesito limpiar el hall de entrada de mi casa, ya que esta lleno de zapatos con arena y sal (propios del combatir la nieve en el invierno de Wisconsin), sombreros, abrigos... todas esas cositas que he postergado para poder pintar! :)

A Work in Progress: Barrio La Boca, Buenos Aires, Argentina (La Boca Neighborhood)

One of my dreams is to have a house full of art made by us, that is meaningful to us. My husband started exploring photography not very long ago and is quickly learning to take beautiful pictures. My favorite ones are those of our children, or of him playing with them, or of the simple moments that make up our days and years as a family. We already have displayed several of his pictures and I'm planning on printing a bunch more and hanging them up all over. Now, when it comes to my paintings... oh, I wish I were getting better as quickly as my husband's photography sense! But I think that, deep inside, I actually am. I used to paint things that really didn't matter much to me, and in that sense, I think I've become a lot more thoughtful. I try to paint images that mean something to me. 

Uno de mis suenos es tener una casa llena de arte hecho por mi familia que tiene un significado especial para nosotros. Mi esposo comenzo a explorar la fotografia no hace mucho y esta aprenediendo rapidamente a sacar unas fotos hermosas. Mis favoritas son aquellas de nuestros hijos, o de el jugando con ellos, o de los simples momentos que componen nuestros dias y anios juntos como familia. Ya hemos colgado muchas fotos suyas y planeo imprimir y colgar muchas mas por toda la casa. Ahora, en cuanto a mis pinturas... oh, como me gustaria poder decir que estan mejorando tan rapidamente como el sentido fotografico de mi esposo. Pero, en realidad, cuando me pongo a pensar objetivamente, creo que si lo estoy logrando. Yo solia pintar cosas que en realidad no tenian mucho significado para mi y, en ese sentido, he mejorado. Ahora trato de pintar arte que encierra un significado personal.

And this is where the photography shown above comes to play. This is a picture of the famous "La Boca" neighborhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I am from Argentina. I grew up and learned a whole bunch of valuable and wonderful things while I lived there. My whole family is still there and I truly appreciate my heritage. So, for a looooong time I've been looking for fun, colorful images of my country and this one easily won my heart!!!! This neighborhood represents a lot of the passion Argentines feel for both tango and soccer. Even though I've never actually been in La Boca (my brother has, though!) I've seen countless pictures of it growing up and always thought whoever chose the paint colors for the walls must be someone with a terrific sense of humor! So, I started working on it. Let me show you some progress. 

Y por esa misma razon puse la foto del Barrio La Boca, en Buenos Aires, Argentina, al principio de este post. Yo soy argentina. Creci y aprendi muchisimas cosas maravillosas y valiosas mientras vivi alli. Toda mi familia continua viviendo alli y sinceramente aprecio mis raices. Entonces, hace un montoooon que vengo buscando una imagen divertida y colorida de mi pais y esta se gano mi corazon el instante en que la vi!!! Este barrio representa la pasion que sienten los argentinos por el futbol y el tango. Y aunque nunca he estado alli en persona (mi hermano si!!), toda mi vida he visto fotos de este lugar. Siempre pense que quien sea que haya elegido los colores de pintura de las paredes tiene un sentido del humor excelente! Asi que, comence a trabajar en esta pintura. Les muestro un poquito de progreso.

 

About this picture... well, you can't really see any progress here, but I just needed to share with you all the excitement of opening my very first LARGE tube of white paint ever! Look at my hand and the size of that tube. I felt unstoppable!!!

 Y esta foto no muestra mucho progreso, pero tenia que compartir con ustedes mi alegria al abrir un pomo de pintura de este tamano. Es mi primer pomo asi de grande! Miren mi mano al lado del pomo. Me senti imparable!!!

And this is as far as I've gotten on it. I'm waaaaay excited about the potential of this painting! When I finish it I'll have it up in the entryway of my house. I'll show you more of what it looks like next week when (hopefully) I finish it!

Y bueno, hasta aqui he llegado. Estoy re contenta con el potencial de esta pintura. Cuando la termine, la voy a colgar en la entrada de mi casa. Les voy a mostrar mas progreso cuando (cruzo los dedos) la termine la semana que viene!

... And I'm Back!!!

Wow, I can't believe I'm actually writing a post again. I feel triumphant! Having a new baby has changed more than one thing around here. You have no idea how long I've been meaning to sit down and, one, paint; and, two, blog about it (and get enough sleep, and get a haircut, etc.) So, I'll celebrate by hurrying up and writing this as fast as I can before one of my three children is up from his/her nap.

Increible! No puedo creer que estoy sentada escribiendo un post nuevamente. Me siento triunfante! El haber tenido un bebe recientemente ha cambiado mas de una cosa por estos lados. No se dan una idea cuanto hace que quiero sentarme y, uno, pintar; y, dos, escribir en este espacio acerca de lo que pinte (y dormir mas, y cortarme el pelo, etc.) En fin, voy a celebrar esta oportunidad apurandome y escribiendo tan rapido como puedo antes de que uno de mis tres hijos se levante de su siesta.

Alright... this may take longer than I thought. Where were we? Ah! My Christmas gift to myself. I got an easel. A real nice one! A big one that doesn't need my kitchen table and that can hold big paintings. I love it.

A ver... uy, esto me va a llevar mas tiempo de lo que pense. Donde habiamos quedado? Ah! El regalo que me hice para Navidad. Me regale un atril. Uno bien lindo! Uno grande que no necesita mi mesa de la cocina y que aguanta lienzos para pinturas grandes. Me encanta.

Also, Sara's painting. I think I'm at the end of what I can do to improve it. Last night I put it in my brand new easel and looked at it looong and hard. Talked about it with my husband, and looked at it again. I can see the things that need improvement... but I don't know how to improve them. Let me show you some pictures.

Tambien queria contarles de la pintura de Sara. Creo que llegue al fin de lo que puedo lograr con esta pintura. Anoche la coloque en mi atril nuevito y la mire por un laaaargo rato. Hable de lo que pense con mi esposo y la mire un buen rato mas. Puedo ver varias cosas que necesitan mejorar... pero no se exactamente como mejorarlas. Aca les muestro unas fotos.

 

Let's talk about the things that need improvement:

1- The tones on her face look a bit unfinished. A bit splotchy. Which can be good, when done right... but not here. It jumps from shadow to light a bit abruptly. Maybe I can change that. But I need to mix the tones all over again... wish me luck!

2- The angle of her right arm is a bit high. It should probably be lower. But that's a HUGE composition mistake and... I believe it's kinda late to fix it without doing some major changes to the painting. It can be done, though. We'll see.

3- The candle is too uniform in color and could be touched up. 

4- Left hand is weird and needs defining, or hiding!

Anyways, those are the things that need change for me. So... since realizing that left me a bit overwhelmed and I still wanted to paint last night, I went ahead and...

A ver, estas son las cosas que necesitan mejorar:

1- Los tonos de la cara se ven un poquito desprolijos. Como manchados. A veces eso se ve lindo en una pintura cuando se hace con estilo... pero este no es el caso. Es como que salta de sombra a luz de repente. Tal vez pueda cambiar eso. Pero tendria que mezclar los tonos de nuevo... necesito suerte!

2- El angulo de su brazo derecho se ve un poco alto. Probablemente deberia estar mas bajo. Pero ese es un GRAN error de composicion y... me parece que es un poquito tarde para arreglarlo sin comenzar cambios grandes en la pintura. Pero si se puede hacer. Veremos.

3- El color de la vela se ve demasiado uniforme y podria retocarse.

4- La mano izquierda se ve medio rara y necesita definicion, o escondite!

En fin, esas son las cosas que veo que tienen que cambiar. Entonces... cuando me di cuenta de todo eso me senti un poquito abrumada, pero seguia con ganas de pintar anoche, asi que...

 And painted the bottom. I know... nothing artistic, but needed to be done! I've made progress.

Y pinte el borde de abajo. Si, no me digan nada... no hice nada artistico, pero habia que hacerlo! Hubo progreso, gente!

Alright,  this painting needs to be done and photographed (and emailed) by the end of February. We'll see what I can get done with my new schedule as a mom of three. Wish me an incredible amount of luck!

En fin, esta pintura necesita estar terminada y fotografiada (y enviada en un email) para fines de febrero. Vamos a ver lo que puedo lograr con mi nuevo horario de madre de tres. Desenme una cantidad importante de suerte!

Painting Sara... (almost done!)

Dear friends! Hope you're all having a great week so far. Mine has been full of active children, strong contractions (I'm due September 12th, but you never know with these little ones!), lots of sleep (thank goodness my children are good night and nap sleepers!), and even more hunger and subsequent food. These days I'm craving toast with peanut butter and honey on it... and ice cream, and many other calorie-rich things :) Let's just say all the "baby weight" I've put on is not just baby.  Let's talk painting now.

Queridos amigos! Espero que todos esten teniendo una buena semana. La mia ha estado repleta de ninos con muuuucha energia, contracciones medio intensas (no tengo fecha hasta el 12 de septiembre, pero uno nunca sabe con estos pequenitos!), mucho descanso (me siento re agradecida de que mis ninos  duermen bien de noche y durante la siesta!) y aun mas hambre y comida. Estos dias ando con antojo de tostada con manteca de mani y miel... y helado, y muchas otras cosas llenas de calorias :) Digamos que todos los kilos "de embarazo" que he subido no son solo de embarazo. Hablemos de pintura ahora!

You may remember my telling you I've signed up for an international art competition about the New Testament held by my church. Well, you probably forgot and that's just fine. I CAN'T forget about it, though, because I have this little reminder on my fridge (a place I've always visited frequently, but now it's practically where I hang out all the time!).

Puede que se acuerden de cuando les conte que me inscribi para un concurso de arte internacional acerca del Nuevo Testamento que organiza mi iglesia. Bueno, probablemente no se acuerdan, y no los culpo. El tema es que yo NO PUEDO olvidarme del asunto porque tengo este recordatorio sobre la puerta de mi heladera (un artefacto que siempre he visitado frecuentemente, pero que ahora se ha vuelto mi lugar preferido a toda hora!).

Anyways, here I show you a few pictures showing some progress on the painting I'm working on. I've done plenty of preliminary drawings and one oil study on it before, so this is my final try. It's not quite finished yet, but it's getting close to what I can do with my current skills. I have from November of this year until February of the next to submit an electronic picture of it for the competition. This is my first time doing something like this, so really I'm just going for the experience and hoping this makes me try a bit harder and learn some more about figure painting.

En fin, aca les muestro algunas fotos del progreso de la pintura que estoy creando. He hecho varios bosquejos preliminares y un estudio al oleo, asi que, esto representa mi esfuerzo final. La pintura no esta terminada todavia, pero se esta acercando al final de mis abilidades en este momento. Tengo desde noviembre de este anio hasta febrero del que viene para enviar una imagen electronica de la pintura final para el concurso. Esta es la primera vez que me animo a hacer algo como esto, asi que, simplemente estoy disfrutando de la experiencia y espero que me haga esforzarme con mas ganas y aprender un poquito mas acerca de pintar la figura humana.

I'm hoping to finish it before September. I'm super grateful for my husband and friends who've given me so much feedback to make Sara look more human than not :) Have a great rest of the week!

Good afternoon everyone! Hope you're all enjoying a nice Monday so far. I got to walk for one hour on a treadmill this morning, so for my pregnant standards I feel like I just ran a marathon (super proud, and pretty exhausted!). Anyways, let's talk painting.

Buenas tardes gente linda! Espero que todos esten teniendo un buen lunes. Esta manana camine una hora sobre una cinta caminadora, y por estar embarazada siento que acabo de correr un maraton completo (me siento super feliz y al mismo tiempo no doy mas del cansancio!). En fin, hablemos de pintura.

Do you remember that I was working on two musical paintings for my dear friends Sonia and Mariana in Argentina? Well, I finished Mariana's a while ago (you can see that one here). And Friday night I finally finished painting Sonia's. Here are some pictures of that colorful adventure:

Se acuerdan que estaba creando dos pinturas musicales para mis amigas Sonia y Mariana en Argentina? Bueno, termine de pintar la de Mariana hace unas semanas (podes verla aqui). Y el viernes pasado finalmente termine la de Sonia. Aca les muestro algunas fotos de esta aventura colorida.

The drawing part is always the hardest for me! It takes me a long time and I'm always afraid to mess up (I still do, and erase and start over several times!) I have to practice more drawing.

La parte del dibujo es la que mas me cuesta! Me lleva un buen rato y siempre tengo miedo de meter la pata (Igual la meto! jaja Y borro y empiezo de nuevo varias veces!) Tengo que practicar mas dibujo.

Compressed Charcoal: Another Try to Draw Sara!

Hello Friends! Sorry I haven't posted anything for a while. Being six months pregnant and trying to enjoy summer activities with the kids make me pretty tired at the end of the day. But yesterday I surprisingly felt a huge amount of energy and stayed up late working on yet another charcoal drawing of Sara. The "huge amount of energy" may be due to the fact that yesterday morning I received a little reminder in the mail about my participation in the "10th International Art Competition: Tell Me The Stories of Jesus". The deadline of submission is approaching and I have done preliminary drawings and  and an oil study... but haven't gotten to final canvas yet!!!!! So CANDELA, we have to get this painting done! (especially before my baby is born... it always takes me months to get back to painting after having a baby!). The submission window is from November 2014- February 2015. I honestly don't have any intention (or expectation) to win anything, but I want this challenge to make me try a bit harder to paint something beautiful and as accurate as possible.

Hola Amigos! Perdon que no he escrito nada en mi blog por algun tiempo. Al estar embarazada de seis meses y querer disfrutar de las actividades de verano con mis pequenitos, termino bastante cansada al final del dia. Pero anoche, no se como, senti un monton de energia y me quede haciendo otro dibujo de carbon comprimido de Sara. Puede que "el monton de energia" se deba a que recibi una tarjetita en el correo ayer a la manana recordandome que estoy inscrita para la "10th International Art Competition: Tell Me The Stories of Jesus". La fecha final de entrega se acerca y ya he hecho varios bosquejos preliminares y un estudio al oleo... pero no he comenzado a pintar nada en el lienzo final!!! Asi que, CANDELA, tenemos que ponernos a trabajar querida! (especialmente antes de que nazca el bebe... siempre me lleva meses pintar de nuevo despues de tener un bebe!). El periodo de tiempo de entrega de pinturas para el concurso es desde noviembre de 2014 hasta febrero de 2015. Honestamente no tengo intenciones (o expectativas) de ganar ningun reconocimiento, pero quiero que este desafio me empuje a esforzarme un poquito mas para pintar algo hermoso y -en lo que mas pueda- exacto.
