Interview with Painter Matt Chatterley.

Hello Gente!

Below is a link to an online interview I did for the magazine Mormon Artist. This one is with Matt Chatterley, a landscape painter (primarily, but he also paints other subjects). I really enjoyed studying his art, coming up with questions, reading his answers, and realizing how deeply art is related to his identity and to everything he does.  Check it out! This magazine is full of wonderful interviews created by volunteers like me, who're just curious people full of questions! Enjoy!

Matt Chatterley- Mormon Artist

Art Museums I Just Visited: Springville Museum of Art.

Angel by James Christensen. Image via www.greenwhichworkshop.com.

Good evening everyone! Here I am, sitting in "the one" very comfortable chair in our house, wearing wool socks (I just got my first pair last month and I am in love... why did I wait thirty years to get some?), with a blanket on my lap and my laptop, which also gets warm and makes it even nicer! Everything is perfectly comfortable, except I now want a cup of water. Oh I wish my husband was home to ask him to get me one... but I'll have to do it. I'll have to get out of this wonderful comfort! (Does this ever happen to you?)

Buenas noches gente!

Aaaanyways, I still haven't gotten that cup of water, but I need to tell you about what I saw at the Springville Museum of Art when I was in Utah last month. This was a quicker visit because the kids were with us and lunch time (and nap time) was approaching, so... long story short, I spent the little time I was there looking at James Christensen's paintings.

James Christensen mostly paints fantastical images... and they are gorgeous! You know how they have those rope barriers in front of paintings so people don't get too close to them? I was annoyed by those! haha I got super close to the paintings anyways and marveled to see his precision and attention to detail. This is a very different type of detail, though, not a realistic one, but a story-telling one. This won't make much sense until I show you some images of my favorites! Here we go.

And here's some more! Don't you wish I had posted better images of bigger resolution so you could also see every brush stroke?? Now you know exactly how I felt at the museum (and promise I don't mean to be just mean... these are the only images I found of these specific paintings! haha).

I really enjoyed seeing how much work and attention he pays to detail. The facial expressions of these tiny people (these are big paintings, but there's so much in them, most characters and elements are pretty small), their clothing, hair, accessories... everything was painted with incredible precision! I also like many of his paintings that were not a part of the exhibit. He has a very distinct and stylized way to portray people. Here's one example:

The Responsible Woman by James Christensen. Image via www.hiddenridgegallery.com.
I remember seeing a print of this painting in a friends' house and looking at it for a long time in order to enjoy all the details of what this woman is carrying. I wasn't a mother when I saw it that first time, and I  thought it was so great to look at... but now that I'm a mom and a homemaker, all those "things" she's carrying have a deeper meaning to me, and this painting becomes a beautiful reflection of what I do -or try to do- everyday. And you know what? I really like how her left foot is barely over the tree... as if she is working hard to stay flying and keeping a balance. That's exactly how I feel most days lately! I really like this painting :)

Alright amigos, I finally got my cup of water, and a cup of ice cream... only to realize I'm ready for another cup of water now... a cup that's always out of my immediate reach!!!. I hope you all enjoyed James Christensen's art today. Doesn't it make you want to illustrate a children's book (even if it's just in your wildest dreams)?

Good Night! Buenas noches!

Drawing Sara: Compressed Charcoal.

Sara. Quick charcoal drawing while the kids nap!!!

Good afternoon amigos! I'm happy because today I got to draw during my kids' nap time. I usually don't draw or paint until the evening, when they're asleep for a long time! But today, thank goodness, they're taking a good nap so I grabbed my toned-paper sketchbook and compressed charcoal. This medium is a messy one (charcoal powder all over my table, hands, and probably face... I just don't know it yet!). The set I have has four colors: red, light brown, black, and white. I haven't used these charcoals very much, so I really don't know what I'm doing. But I have enjoyed playing with them!

Buenas tardes amigos!

Let me show you some progress:

Aca les muestro un poquillo de progreso:

Aaaaanyways, the kids woke up. So I have to go do my motherly duties. But I hope you enjoyed compressed charcoal as much as my dirty hands and fingernails :)

Art Museums I Just Visited: MOA at Brigham Young University.

Me at the "Sacred Gifts" exhibit at the MOA, Brigham Young University, Utah (02-2014)
Good afternoon everyone! Sorry for the blog absence these past two weeks. We were in Utah visiting family for my sister-in-law's wedding and just got back. We had a great time and enjoyed their "tropical" weather of 30's and 40's before returning to frigid Madison, WI.

Buenas tardes gente querida!

While in Utah I visited two art museums. The MOA at Brigham Young University, and the Springville Museum of Art. What a treat!!! My husband and I went to the first one without our children (thank goodness for loving grandparents who enjoy babysitting while we're there!) and to the second with them. Guess which visit lasted longer? Yep, the first one. But the kids were ok at the Springville museum... they just made it so their dad couldn't see much and I had to rush a bit through the exhibits. The joys of small, constantly exploring, curiously wandering children!

Let me tell you about what I saw at the MOA. Four years ago I went there to see their Carl Bloch exhibit. It was the stuff of dreams. Original art work by this Danish master brought from all over the world temporarily for me to enjoy! I had taken my first painting class by then, but I had never attempted painting people. So I enjoyed the exhibit because it was beautiful and very meaningful for its Christian message.

Me at the Carl Bloch exhibit in 2010, MOA, Brigham Young University, Utah.

But this time I enjoyed all that PLUS his realistic and incredibly skilled way of portraying people and emotions.... and skin, and hair, and muscles, and drapery... WOW! I was happily overwhelmed by so many beautiful paintings.

INCREIBLE! Me senti felizmente abrumada de ver tantas pinturas hermosas.

I wasn't allowed to take pictures inside the exhibit, so here are some copies of my favorites.

Christ Mocked by a Soldier by Carl Bloch. Image via www.carlbloch.com
This painting left me amazed. The fact that Christ is looking at the viewer makes it even more powerful.   You can almost hear what the soldier is thinking and telling him by the way he's grabbing Jesus' hair and mantle. The contrasting expression in both faces, the reflection of light on the different surfaces (skin vs. fabric, metal helmet, lips, eyes). Every detail was so well thought out. That is why he's achieved such levels of realism and expression. Every detail is accounted for. I love it.

Me encanta!

Gethsemane by Carl Bloch. Image via commons.wikimedia.org
I like this painting because you can tell this is a dark place, but there's light around them. I like the rested poses of their heads and arms... you wouldn't believe it if I told you I have the hardest time drawing a relaxed position like that!!!! (or maybe you would, actually :). I love the tender position of the heads and the message of consolation that it portrays.

(o tal vez si me creerias :).

Christ Healing by The Well of Bethesda by Carl Bloch. Image via religiousforums.com

This painting is actually a part of the permanent collection at the MOA. It's huge and profound. When I look at this painting I realize that, at some time or another, and whether I want to accept it or not, I've acted like each one of the characters in it. I've been the one in despair and in need of help, I've been the indifferent, the one who's too busy to care, the one who actually cares and does something about those in need (I have to confess though, I don't act like this character as often as I should!), the one who's just watching and being critical about the act of kindness... I've acted a lot like the characters we see here. That's why I think this can be a very personal and educational painting. It's one of my favorites because of that.

In a nutshell, it was a great blessing to be able to see such wonderful and meaningful art. Go see it if you're in Provo, Utah, any time soon! After the exhibit is over, most of the paintings will be returned to their original churches all over the world. I feel sorry for those people who're going to church and don't see their regular paintings there, but I'm grateful they're sharing them with me through a museum so far away from their original homes!

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed seeing some of Carl Bloch's art today!
