Pansies!

"Pansies" in watercolors. Inspired by "Garden Blooms" on Etsy.com

By the amount of floral paintings I've been doing you'd think I'd have a beautiful garden of flowers on my front yard. I'm sad to confess that I don't know a thing about flowers. The few that I have on my front and backyard are perennials that someone planted some time before we moved into this house. Without my doing a thing, those beautiful flowers come to me every year; in spite of the most harsh winter weather (and the minimal yard work I like to do when Spring comes). I'm grateful for perennials! But, hey... today, for the first time ever, I bought some gorgeous lilies AND planted them on my front yard. I'm so proud... I walked by that area afterwards like five times just to see my beautiful new yellow lilies.

ANYWAYS, painting. This was a quick one inspired by the many gorgeous watercolor creations found at the "Garden Blooms" shop on Etsy.com. I don't even know how many paintings that woman has produced, but they are all beautiful. Go check it out!

Have a wonderful week. Que tengan una semana maravillosa!

Geraniums!

Geraniums in watercolor pencils (left), and watercolor paints (right). Inspiration from
"Garden Blooms" on Etsy.

Every time I see geraniums I remember my childhood, especially the walks to and from kindergarten and early elementary school in the city of Cordoba, Argentina. I had this weakness for flowers... I'd cut them by hand (from people's gardens, without permission!) and then give them to my mom when I got home. But, as you may imagine, one day I got caught and that stopped my weakness (at least the "without permission" part of it). This one old lady saw me from behind her window when I was cutting one of her geraniums from her front yard. She knocked on the glass so loudly I just opened my eyes really wide, dropped the flower on the sidewalk and started running as fast as I could. I'm pretty sure I'll never forget what I felt that afternoon. I think it was on that day that my mom taught me to ask the home owners for a flower or two every once in a while. To my surprise, all of them were always more than happy to share their blooms with me!

The other day I came along this beautiful watercolor painting on Pinterest that led me to this gorgeous Etsy shop called Garden Blooms. It's a pity the name of the painter isn't there, but she sure paints beautiful flowers. She inspired me to copy her geraniums so I become more familiar with using watercolor pencils and paints. I made the same painting using these two mediums.

After coloring all the areas I wanted to cover with the watercolor pencils, I painted them with water and the picture came to life! What a fun process. But I still don't think I know what I'm doing... some areas didn't become as dark as I had hoped them to be, so I went back with the pencils and added more pigment to them, only to find out the water wouldn't dissolve the color on the second try. When I produced the same painting with the watercolor paints, the process wasn't only waaaay faster, it also turned out as dark as I had hoped without much effort. I'll keep playing with those pencils and see if I learn to understand them better :)

Vegetables!

Watercolor painting of some veggies, for my kitchen!

My kitchen needs a bit of color, so I decided to paint some vegetables that would bring that in. As I was painting them, I realized that I need to consume a wider variety of vegetables. Like, for example, I don't even remember when it was the last time that I ate anything with beet in it... or asparagus! So, may this painting be a reminder to add some of these vegetables to my grocery list!

Watercolor Birds on Tea Dyed Paper

Finished watercolor painting inspired by Lucia Stewart's art.

I finally used that tea dyed paper I had from last week. I painted these colorful birds inspired by Lucia Stewart's paintings (you can click on this link, Lucia Stewart's Etsy Shop, to see more of her hilarious creations!). I started it with ink, then watercolor pencils, and then some final touches with watercolor paints. I think it turned out cute!

Quedo linda, no?

Inspiration sources, tea paper dyeing, and watercolor pencils.

It's been a fun week here in Wisconsin. "Fun" for those who are indoor-sey like me and feel inspired by cold days with constant rain! Days like these make me more productive when it comes to painting, or cleaning the house. I like them a lot :) Let me show you what I've been up to in the last few days.

A friend of mine sent us a beautiful Thank You card full of flowers that spoke to my heart! Thank you for the inspiration, Christine Trask! Here's what I painted in watercolors:

Gracias Christine Trask! Aqui esta lo que pinte con acuarelas:

Then I found a post somewhere about dyeing watercolor paper with prepared black tea. I had to try it!  I dyed the paper and it's all dry now, I'll show you soon what I made with it.

Last Friday, my friend Melanie came over to paint with me for a few hours while our little ones played. She owns a beautiful set of watercolor pencils that I desperately needed to play with! They are so fun to use. I need to get myself some! Thank goodness for weekly coupons to craft stores that make those purchases possible :) I think the cards made with those pencils turned out cute. I used two different methods with each one. The first card (darker one) is the result of drawing everything first with the pencils and then going over with a wet brush. The second one (lighter) happened as I got the paper wet first and then drew on it with the watercolor pencils. I think I like the first method better.

In a nutshell, I had a blast making these little cards. It's interesting how necessary it is for me (and I believe it's true for many people!) to create something whenever possible. I can go for a while without making something, but after some time SOMETHING inside me itches to the point where I absolutely NEED to create something. No matter how small or quick, it's a need. It makes me happier and it makes my life more meaningful. I hope you all out there find time to create something whenever you can.

Have a great rest of the week!
