Painting Sara... (almost done!)

Dear friends! Hope you're all having a great week so far. Mine has been full of active children, strong contractions (I'm due September 12th, but you never know with these little ones!), lots of sleep (thank goodness my children are good night and nap sleepers!), and even more hunger and subsequent food. These days I'm craving toast with peanut butter and honey on it... and ice cream, and many other calorie-rich things :) Let's just say all the "baby weight" I've put on is not just baby.  Let's talk painting now.

Queridos amigos! Espero que todos esten teniendo una buena semana. La mia ha estado repleta de ninos con muuuucha energia, contracciones medio intensas (no tengo fecha hasta el 12 de septiembre, pero uno nunca sabe con estos pequenitos!), mucho descanso (me siento re agradecida de que mis ninos  duermen bien de noche y durante la siesta!) y aun mas hambre y comida. Estos dias ando con antojo de tostada con manteca de mani y miel... y helado, y muchas otras cosas llenas de calorias :) Digamos que todos los kilos "de embarazo" que he subido no son solo de embarazo. Hablemos de pintura ahora!

You may remember my telling you I've signed up for an international art competition about the New Testament held by my church. Well, you probably forgot and that's just fine. I CAN'T forget about it, though, because I have this little reminder on my fridge (a place I've always visited frequently, but now it's practically where I hang out all the time!).

Puede que se acuerden de cuando les conte que me inscribi para un concurso de arte internacional acerca del Nuevo Testamento que organiza mi iglesia. Bueno, probablemente no se acuerdan, y no los culpo. El tema es que yo NO PUEDO olvidarme del asunto porque tengo este recordatorio sobre la puerta de mi heladera (un artefacto que siempre he visitado frecuentemente, pero que ahora se ha vuelto mi lugar preferido a toda hora!).

Anyways, here I show you a few pictures showing some progress on the painting I'm working on. I've done plenty of preliminary drawings and one oil study on it before, so this is my final try. It's not quite finished yet, but it's getting close to what I can do with my current skills. I have from November of this year until February of the next to submit an electronic picture of it for the competition. This is my first time doing something like this, so really I'm just going for the experience and hoping this makes me try a bit harder and learn some more about figure painting.

En fin, aca les muestro algunas fotos del progreso de la pintura que estoy creando. He hecho varios bosquejos preliminares y un estudio al oleo, asi que, esto representa mi esfuerzo final. La pintura no esta terminada todavia, pero se esta acercando al final de mis abilidades en este momento. Tengo desde noviembre de este anio hasta febrero del que viene para enviar una imagen electronica de la pintura final para el concurso. Esta es la primera vez que me animo a hacer algo como esto, asi que, simplemente estoy disfrutando de la experiencia y espero que me haga esforzarme con mas ganas y aprender un poquito mas acerca de pintar la figura humana.

I'm hoping to finish it before September. I'm super grateful for my husband and friends who've given me so much feedback to make Sara look more human than not :) Have a great rest of the week!

Good afternoon everyone! Hope you're all enjoying a nice Monday so far. I got to walk for one hour on a treadmill this morning, so for my pregnant standards I feel like I just ran a marathon (super proud, and pretty exhausted!). Anyways, let's talk painting.

Buenas tardes gente linda! Espero que todos esten teniendo un buen lunes. Esta manana camine una hora sobre una cinta caminadora, y por estar embarazada siento que acabo de correr un maraton completo (me siento super feliz y al mismo tiempo no doy mas del cansancio!). En fin, hablemos de pintura.

Do you remember that I was working on two musical paintings for my dear friends Sonia and Mariana in Argentina? Well, I finished Mariana's a while ago (you can see that one here). And Friday night I finally finished painting Sonia's. Here are some pictures of that colorful adventure:

Se acuerdan que estaba creando dos pinturas musicales para mis amigas Sonia y Mariana en Argentina? Bueno, termine de pintar la de Mariana hace unas semanas (podes verla aqui). Y el viernes pasado finalmente termine la de Sonia. Aca les muestro algunas fotos de esta aventura colorida.

The drawing part is always the hardest for me! It takes me a long time and I'm always afraid to mess up (I still do, and erase and start over several times!) I have to practice more drawing.

La parte del dibujo es la que mas me cuesta! Me lleva un buen rato y siempre tengo miedo de meter la pata (Igual la meto! jaja Y borro y empiezo de nuevo varias veces!) Tengo que practicar mas dibujo.

Compressed Charcoal: Another Try to Draw Sara!

Hello Friends! Sorry I haven't posted anything for a while. Being six months pregnant and trying to enjoy summer activities with the kids make me pretty tired at the end of the day. But yesterday I surprisingly felt a huge amount of energy and stayed up late working on yet another charcoal drawing of Sara. The "huge amount of energy" may be due to the fact that yesterday morning I received a little reminder in the mail about my participation in the "10th International Art Competition: Tell Me The Stories of Jesus". The deadline of submission is approaching and I have done preliminary drawings and  and an oil study... but haven't gotten to final canvas yet!!!!! So CANDELA, we have to get this painting done! (especially before my baby is born... it always takes me months to get back to painting after having a baby!). The submission window is from November 2014- February 2015. I honestly don't have any intention (or expectation) to win anything, but I want this challenge to make me try a bit harder to paint something beautiful and as accurate as possible.

Hola Amigos! Perdon que no he escrito nada en mi blog por algun tiempo. Al estar embarazada de seis meses y querer disfrutar de las actividades de verano con mis pequenitos, termino bastante cansada al final del dia. Pero anoche, no se como, senti un monton de energia y me quede haciendo otro dibujo de carbon comprimido de Sara. Puede que "el monton de energia" se deba a que recibi una tarjetita en el correo ayer a la manana recordandome que estoy inscrita para la "10th International Art Competition: Tell Me The Stories of Jesus". La fecha final de entrega se acerca y ya he hecho varios bosquejos preliminares y un estudio al oleo... pero no he comenzado a pintar nada en el lienzo final!!! Asi que, CANDELA, tenemos que ponernos a trabajar querida! (especialmente antes de que nazca el bebe... siempre me lleva meses pintar de nuevo despues de tener un bebe!). El periodo de tiempo de entrega de pinturas para el concurso es desde noviembre de 2014 hasta febrero de 2015. Honestamente no tengo intenciones (o expectativas) de ganar ningun reconocimiento, pero quiero que este desafio me empuje a esforzarme un poquito mas para pintar algo hermoso y -en lo que mas pueda- exacto.

Hello everyone! I hope many of you are enjoying a relaxing night next to a bowl of ice cream. Those happen to be my circumstances tonight... and I'd be lying if I said it isn't awesome and that I'll only be having one bowl of it! Anyways, let's talk painting now.

Hola a todos! Espero que muchos de ustedes esten disfrutando de una linda noche con un bowl de helado en las manos. Por alguna razon magica, esas son mis circumstancias esta noche... y les miento si les digo que no estoy disfrutandolas y que solo voy a comer un bowl de helado! En fin, hablemos de las pinturas ahora.

I've been wanting to paint something for my dear friends Sonia and Mariana for some time now. We have been a very happy "trio" ever since our teens and have wonderful memories together. Every time I get to go to Argentina we get together and chat and laugh as if we were still thirteen years old, which is awesome. Sometimes I forget I have a sense of humor, and they always seem to bring it back in me!

He querido pintar algo para mis amigas Sonia y Mariana desde hace bastante. Somos un trio feliz desde nuestra adolescencia y tenemos recuerdos hermosos juntas. Cada vez que tengo la oportunidad de ir a Argentina nos reunimos y charlamos y nos reimos como si todavia tuvieramos trece anios, lo cual es maravilloso. A veces me olvido de que tengo un sentido del humor, y ellas tienen la capacidad de siempre traerlo a flote cuando estamos juntas.

After telling them I wanted to paint something, they sent me images of paintings they like. Both of them sent me paintings that have to do with music. Sonia's painting was done by Leonid Afremov. We're still trying to find the author of Mariana's painting (so I'll have to post it as anonymous for now). But if you know the name, please let me know!

La pintura de Sonia fue creada por Leonid Afremov. Todavia estamos tratando de encontrar el nombre del pintor/ la pintora de la de Mariana. Asi que, por ahora me disculpo, la pongo como anonima (pero si alguno de ustedes sabe el nombre del autor, por favor diganmelo!).

I'll get started with Sonia's now and see if I can paint a person who is so happily playing the cello! (talk about a challenge!). But I'm excited, I always learn something with each new painting.

Ahora comenzare la pintura de Sonia y veremos si puedo pintar a una persona que disfruta tanto de tocar el cello! (que desafio!). Pero estoy contenta, siempre aprendo algo con cada nueva pintura.

Nautical Painting Finished!

Dear amigos! After what it feels like months of not touching a paintbrush, I finally sat down and finished this painting for my friend Melanie's baby. I'm very happy to inform all of you that he was born yesterday and that both mom and baby are doing great!!! The last time I worked on this painting I wrote down some items that needed to be addressed. And these are the things I worked on today. Here's the list:

- Add more texture to water

- Finish up men in the boat

- Paint ropes under the sail

- Add some detail to the other two little boats

- Gray up clouds a bit more (especially the hot pink parts)

- Add orange highlights on sail boat surfaces

Queridos amigos! Despues de lo que pareciera como meses de no tocar un pincel, finalmente me sente y termine esta pintura para el bebe de mi amiga Melanie. Estoy re feliz de informales que el bebe nacio ayer y que tanto el como su mama estan muy bien! La ultima vez que trabaje sobre esta pintura hice una lista de cositas que necesitaban mi atencion. Esas son las cosas en las que me enfoque hoy. Aqui les muestro la lista:

- Agregar textura al agua

- Terminar de pintar los hombres en el bote

- Pintar las sogas que aparecen debajo de las velas

- Agregar un poquito mas de detalle a los otros dos barquitos

- Pintar con gris sobre aquellas nubes que estan demasiado rosadas

- Agregar reflejos anaranjados sobre algunas superficies del barco principal

I hope Melanie and baby both like the painting! It's been a challenging adventure with all the colors in the sky and water. Remember I was going to do palette knife texture? Do you notice that I didn't do it? Well... I learned my lesson. Next time I want to do that, I should do the palette knife painting when I have all the colors mixed and ready. My idea to add texture at the end only meant that I had to mix up ALL OF THE COLORS all over again (and match them closely to what I already had painted) in order to add texture. Because by the time the paint was dry on the canvas to start adding texture... the paint on my plate was dry as well and I couldn't use it anymore! So, word to the wise: Use the palette knife earlier in the process next time! But overall, I'm very happy with all I've learned with this experience. Hope they like it!

Espero que a Melanie y a su bebe les guste la pintura! Ha sido un buen desafio pintar tantos colores en el cielo y el agua. Se acuerdan que iba a pintar con espatula? Ven que al final no lo hice? Bueno, aprendi una leccion. La proxima vez que quiera pintar con espatula, lo voy a hacer cuando tenga todos los colores mezclados y listos y no al final. La idea mia de agregar textura al final con la espatula significo que tenia que mezclar TODOS ESOS COLORES de nuevo (y tener la suerte de que se parezcan a los que ya habia pintado). Porque para cuando la pintura se habia secado sobre el lienzo para comenzar a agregar textura con la espatula... tambien se habia secado sobre mis platos de mezcla y no la podia utilizar mas. Asi que, mi consejo a mi misma es el siguiente: Usa la espatula cuando comenzas a mezclar colores! Aun asi, estoy contenta con todo lo que aprendi con esta experiencia. Espero que les guste!

Say what?!? The other day I was searching the web for free online art classes. And I found this one, among others. It's a figure drawing class taught online by Patricia Watwood at craftsy.com. The class is called "Figure Drawing Atelier". The nice thing about this class (apart from it being free!) is that you can watch it a million times and you can chat with other students who are also watching it. Besides, you can submit your own drawings and benefit from the fresh eyes of fellow classmates that can give you a few pointers. Because this class is free, the instructor doesn't directly respond to your questions, but your classmates can. There are many other classes offered in this website at different prices as well. If you're interested in taking this free one, here is the link!!! Enjoy!

Como?!?! Una clase de arte, por internet... y gratuita? Si! El otro dia estaba buscando clases de arte gratuitas por internet y encontre esta, entre muchas otras. Se trata de la figura humana y la ensena Patricia Watwood en el sitio craftsy.com. La clase se llama "Figure Drawing Atelier" y lo lindo (aparte de que es gratis!) es que uno puede mirarla un millon de veces y chatear con otros estudiantes que tambien la estan mirando. Aparte, uno puede enviar sus propios dibujos al sitio para que los companeros de la clase te den consejos al ver tu trabajo desde otra perspectiva. Al ser gratuita, la instructora no contesta las preguntas que envies, pero tus companeros de clase si pueden hacerlo. El sitio ofrece muchas otras clases a diferentes costos tambien. Blue Teapot for A Dear Friend.

Good afternoon amigos and thank goodness for kids who -sometimes- nap really well! So, let me show you this cute blue teapot I just finished for my friend Luisa Maria before they wake up! I love how the colors work together. And, if you understand Spanish, all of the words written around it have to do with the things Luisa Maria and I eat when we're together. We like to eat... a lot. We often joke that maybe it's a good thing she's moving away (sniff, sniff) so we both can stop gaining weight! hahaha

Buenas tardes gente linda! Y... gracias a la vida por ninos que -de vez en cuando- duermen una larga siesta! Entonces, dejenme que les muestre esta tetera azul que recien termine para mi amiga Luisa Maria... antes de que ellos se despierten! Me gusta como quedaron los colores. Y, todas las palabras escritas alrededor son representativas de las cosas que comemos cuando ella y yo estamos juntas. Nos gusta comer... un monton. Siempre nos reimos cuando hablamos de que tal vez sea mejor que ella tenga que mudarse (aunque me ponga triste), asi las dos podemos dejar de engordar tanto! jaja
