Inspiration sources, tea paper dyeing, and watercolor pencils.

It's been a fun week here in Wisconsin. "Fun" for those who are indoor-sey like me and feel inspired by cold days with constant rain! Days like these make me more productive when it comes to painting, or cleaning the house. I like them a lot :) Let me show you what I've been up to in the last few days.

Ha sido una semana divertida aqui en Wisconsin. "Divertida" para aquellos que, como yo, prefieren estar adentro y se sienten inspirados en dias frios y lluviosos! Dias como estos me hacen mas productiva en cuanto a pintar algo o a limpiar mi casa, me encantan :) Ahora les muestro lo que hice estos dias que pasaron.

A friend of mine sent us a beautiful Thank You card full of flowers that spoke to my heart! Thank you for the inspiration, Christine Trask! Here's what I painted in watercolors:

Then I found a post somewhere about dyeing watercolor paper with prepared black tea. I had to try it!  I dyed the paper and it's all dry now, I'll show you soon what I made with it.

Despues encontre un articulo en algun lado en internet que hablaba de que se podia tenir papel de acuarelas con te negro. Tuve que hacer el experimento! Teni el papel y esta seco ahora, despues les muestro lo que hice con el.

 

Last Friday, my friend Melanie came over to paint with me for a few hours while our little ones played. She owns a beautiful set of watercolor pencils that I desperately needed to play with! They are so fun to use. I need to get myself some! Thank goodness for weekly coupons to craft stores that make those purchases possible :) I think the cards made with those pencils turned out cute. I used two different methods with each one. The first card (darker one) is the result of drawing everything first with the pencils and then going over with a wet brush. The second one (lighter) happened as I got the paper wet first and then drew on it with the watercolor pencils. I think I like the first method better.

El viernes pasado, mi amiga Melanie vino a mi casa a pintar y dibujar conmigo mientras nuestros pequenitos jugaban juntos. Ella tiene un hermoso set de lapices de acuarela que yo tenia que probar desesperadamente! Son increibles. Necesito comprarme unos! Que bueno que existen cupones de descuento semanales a tiendas de manualidades para hacer esas compras posibles :) Creo que las tarjetas que cree con esos lapices quedaron lindas. Use dos metodos diferentes con cada una. La primera (la mas oscura) la logre al pintar todo primero con los lapices y despues pasar el pincel con agua por arriba. La segunda (la mas clara) se dio al mojar el papel primero y pintar con los lapices sobre papel mojado. Me parece que me gusta mas el primer metodo.

In a nutshell, I had a blast making these little cards. It's interesting how necessary it is for me (and I believe it's true for many people!) to create something whenever possible. I can go for a while without making something, but after some time SOMETHING inside me itches to the point where I absolutely NEED to create something. No matter how small or quick, it's a need. It makes me happier and it makes my life more meaningful. I hope you all out there find time to create something whenever you can.

En fin, la pase muy bien creando estas tarjetitas. Es interesante lo necesario que es para mi (y creo yo que este es el caso para la mayoria de la gente!) crear algo cuando pueda. Pueden pasar unos cuantos dias sin hacerlo, pero despues de un tiempo ALGO adentro mio tiembla al punto que es absolutamente NECESARIO crear algo. No importa cuan pequeno o simple, es una necesidad. Me hace feliz y hace de mi vida algo mas significativo. Espero que todos ustedes encuentren el tiempo para crear algo, cuando sea que puedan.

Watercoloring...

My little forget-me-not cards done with watercolors.

Well, it's been a while! But man it's good to blog again... even if it's for ten minutes (before I fall asleep!). Painting takes energy, creative energy... which I don't seem to have much of at the end of the day, when I'm free to paint. Oil painting requires me to set up quite a few supplies and then clean up everything, so that's another reason why I haven't painted much with oils lately. BUT I'm happy to report that I have been painting SOMETHING... even if it's just for a few minutes here and there. I've been painting with watercolors. I never took a class where I learned well how to use watercolors, and they tend to do whatever they want on paper, so I'm still trying to figure out how to best work with them without getting too frustrated. It's been fun, though. Easy to use and easy to clean. In the last few weeks I painted these cute little cards with Forget-Me-Not flowers for a church event we're having next month.

Bueno, tanto tiempo! Pero que bien se siente poder escribir otra vez... aunque sea por diez minutos (antes de que me quede dormida!). Pintar requiere energia, energia creativa... de la cual me queda muy poquito al final del dia, cuando tengo tiempo para pintar. El pintar con oleos requiere que prepare varios elementos de trabajo y que limpie todo al terminar, otra razon por la que no he pintado mucho con oleos ultimamente. PERO estoy feliz de contarles que he pintado ALGO... aunque solo sea por unos minutos aqui y alli. He estado pintando con acuarelas. Nunca tome una clase de acuarelas, y medio que tienden a hacer lo que ellas quieren en el papel (mas alla de lo que una ponga con el pincel), asi que sigo tratando de ver como trabajar con este medio sin frustrarme tanto. Pero la verdad es que ha sido divertido. Se usa y se limpia facilmente. En las ultimas semanas pinte estas tarjetitas lindas de florcitas "No me olvides" para una actividad de la iglesia del mes que viene.

Lindas, no? Pinte 48 tarjetitas... y ninguna es igual a la otra. Me gustan!

This afternoon, while the house was quiet and my little boy was painting with watercolors, I painted these little birds and house. Both ideas came from Pinterest. They were a study before painting on watercolor paper.

Esta tarde estaba tranquila la casa durante la siesta y mientras mi hijito pintaba con acuarelas, me sume y pinte estos pajaritos y esta casita. Ambas ideas las saque de Pinterest. Fueron como un estudio antes de pintarlas sobre papel de acuarela.

A Painting of Two Authors.

Manti Temple, by my Dad and Me :)

It's good to write a few lines again! I've been meaning to tell you about my latest painting. This one has been in the making for a long time. About one and a half years ago, when my dad came to visit me for the birth of our daughter, I asked him to draw the Manti temple for me. I had seen this painting online by Corsetti a long time ago and we used it as a model. My dad can draw buildings pretty well and pretty fast (two things that I wish I had inherited!).

Que lindo es sentarse a escribir un poquito otra vez! He querido contarles acerca de mi ultima pintura. Ha estado en proceso desde hace bastante. Hace un anio y medio aproximadamente, cuando mi papa vino a visitarme por el nacimiento de nuestra hija, le pedi que me dibujara el templo de Manti. Yo había visto esta pintura de Corsetti y la usamos como modelo. Mi papa puede dibujar edificios muy bien y rápidamente (dos cosas que desearía haber heredado!).

Now, you may wonder why I wanted him to draw this specific building for me. Eight years ago, my husband and I got married in this temple. It means a lot to me and it's a symbol of the promises that we made to each other on that day. I have a photograph of the Manti temple on the wall of our living room, but I've always wanted to paint it as well.

Ahora, puede que se pregunten por que le pedi a mi papa que me dibuje este edificio. Ocho años atrás, mi esposo y yo nos casamos en este templo. Significa mucho para mi y es un símbolo de las promesas que nos hicimos el uno al otro ese dia. Tengo una foto del templo de Manti en mi living, pero siempre quise pintarlo.

Well, like I said, one and a half years have past, and I finally decided to add my part to my dad's drawing and paint it. It helped that I wanted to present it for a Talent Show in our church a few days ago. Deadlines can be a blessing for procrastinators like me ;) Here are some pictures.

Bueno, como les decía, un anio y medio ha pasado y finalmente me decidí a agregarle mi parte al dibujo de mi papa. Me ayudo el querer terminarla para un show de talentos que tuvimos en la iglesia hace unos días. Fechas de entrega... a veces pueden ser una bendición para aquellos que nos gusta posponer ;) Aca les muestro unas fotos.

It was truly so nice to write down my dad's and my name on this painting! It is now a keepsake of my dad's talents and my efforts. When I was a little girl I always enjoyed watching my dad draw. He completed most of his training in architecture back in the day when all of the drawings were done by hand. I loved looking at his drafting table, his papers, markers, brushes, paints and ink bottles... it was all magical to me! With time I inherited many of his materials and I sure enjoyed using them!! Thank you, Dad, for sharing the joy of drawing with me since my childhood!

Fue tan lindo poder firmar la pintura con ambos nombres! Esta pintura me queda como un recuerdo del talento de mi querido papa y de mi esfuerzo. Cuando era chica siempre disfrutaba de ver a mi papa dibujar, quien completo gran parte de la carrera de arquitectura en los días donde se dibujaba todo a mano. Me encantaba mirar su tablero, sus papeles, marcadores, pinceles, pinturas y botellas de tinta... para mi todo era mágico! Con el tiempo el me regalo muchos de sus materiales y los disfrute al máximo. Gracias papa por compartir el gozo del dibujo conmigo desde tan chiquita!

I don't know why, but I love using thick amounts of oil paint here and there. I just can't get over it! (although that can make it so the painting doesn't dry for five days!)

No se por que, pero me encanta usar MUCHA pintura para los detalles que pongo aquí y allí en la pintura. Me apasiona! (el problemita es que después la pintura no se seca como por cinco días!)

Anyways, hope you guys are enjoying your week! We're getting quite a bit of snow in Wisconsin these days. Perfect weather for an incredible amount of hot chocolate (or Argentine Mate)!

Watercolors, Hot Air Balloons, and Phone Cases.

Hello everyone! Goodness it's been a while. Oh well, I'm excited to tell you that last night I painted a little bit. You may not know this, but I don't like watercolors very much. At least not as much as oils. But something happened last week that made me want to give watercolors a try: I bought a phone case. My old case broke so I went online and ordered this one, simply because I fell in love with it. I don't know who the artist is, but I'll find out! I love the design, the ink and watercolor mix (at least that's what I think it is!). So anyways, that little illustration has inspired me to what I painted and drew last night.

Hola gente! Cuanto hace que no nos comunicamos! Y bue... pero estoy contenta de contarles que anoche pinte un poquito. Puede que no sepan esto, pero no me gustan mucho las acuarelas. Al menos, no me gustan tanto como los oleos. Pero algo paso la semana pasada que me impulso a darle una chance a las acuarelas: compre un estuche nuevo para mi teléfono. Se me rompió el estuche que tenia antes y compre el que tengo ahora por internet. No se el nombre del artista que lo diseño, pero quiero averiguarlo. Me encanta el diseño y la ilustración. Me encanta la mezcla de tinta con acuarelas (al menos eso creo que es lo que uso el artista!). En fin, esa pequeña ilustración en el estuche de mi teléfono me inspiro a lo que dibuje y pinte anoche.

It's my friend Nicole's birthday tomorrow, so I painted this for her birthday card. I hope she likes it! I think I may frame and hung up the ink drawing at my house... by the kitchen so I see it often!

Manana es el cumpleaños de mi amiga Nicole, así que pinte esto para crearle una tarjeta. Espero que le guste! Creo que voy a enmarcar y colgar el dibujo con tinta en mi casa... cerca de la cocina, así lo veo seguido!

Painting "with" Rose Datoc Dall.

What I've painted so far following Rose Datoc Dall's free online class.

I don't know if I ever told you this, but I LOVE Rose Datoc Dall's paintings. I've been following her work for some years now, and her art just speaks to my heart. In April of last year she taught a painting course at Southern Virginia University. She streamed two of the classes of the course live and free on YouTube. They are great classes and last about three hours each. So I decided that one day I was going to sit through the classes with brush in hand and paint along with her. Well... it only took me a year ;), but I finally sat down and painted along with her last night (thank you, Internet!). Here are the links to her classes, if you'd like to do the same (you may need to subscribe to the Southern Virginia University's YouTube channel in order to watch them... but they're free!)

No se si alguna vez les conte esto, pero ME ENCANTAN las pinturas de Rose Datoc Dall. He estado siguiendo su trabajo desde hace algunos años y su arte realmente me llena el alma! En abril del año pasado ella enseno un curso de pintura en la Universidad de Southern Virginia. Lo bueno es que filmaron dos de las clases del curso y las pusieron en YouTube en vivo y gratuitamente. Son clases muy buenas y duran como tres horas cada una. Entonces decidi que algun dia me sentaria con pincel en mano a mirarlas y a pintar con ella. Bueno... solo me llevo un año lograrlo ;), pero ayer finalmente me sente a pintar con ella por medio del internet. Aqui les pongo los links para sus clases, si les gustaria hacer lo mismo (puede que tengan que subscribirse al canal de YouTube de Southern Virginia University para mirarlas... pero son gratis!)

 And so you know... I struggled quite a bit with the face! I kept wiping out areas with a paper towel and starting over again.

Y para que sepan... me re costo pintar la cara! Tuve que borrar ciertas partes con una toalla de papel y comenzar de nuevo varias veces.

And that's as far as I've gotten on it. She says she paints the eyes at the very end (and I'm grateful she does this, since I obviously need to fix a couple of things about those eyes!) I still have one more hour to go on the class. I LOVE how I can get back to it whenever I can (and it may be a while, although I really hope I can paint again soon!) This was PURE joy to me. Her painting technique is very direct and fast. She draws the figure with brown and gets to start with colors right away. Her style is not realistic, and she is very clear about that as she teaches and paints, but it's a beautiful and unique one. I loved following her explanations and choice of colors. It has open a ton of possibilities for me that I didn't know about before, especially when it comes to painting skin. Instead of mixing a bunch of colors beforehand, she uses a basic skin tone and adds on layers of color (wet on wet) as she goes.

Y hasta aqui llegue. Ella dice que pinta los ojos al final (y yo agradecida por esa tecnica ya que, obviamente, tengo mas de una cosita que arreglare a los ojos que pinte!) Me queda una hora mas de esta clase. Me ENCANTA el hecho de que puedo volver a retomarla cuando pueda (y puede que me lleve algun tiempito, aunque realmente espero poder pintar de nuevo pronto!) Esta clase realmente me dio PURO gozo. Su tecnica de pintura es bien directa y rapida. Dibuja la figura con marron y empieza a usar los colores ahi nomas. Su estilo no es realista, y ella es bien clara en cuanto a esto cuando ensena y pinta, pero es uno hermoso y unico. Disfrute mucho de escuchar sus explicaciones y sus decisiones en cuanto a los colores. Me ha abierto la mente a un monton de posibilidades que no conocia, especialmente en cuanto a pintar los tonos de la piel. En vez de mezclar un monton de tonos antes de pintar, ella usa un tono basico para toda la piel y agrega capas de color (mojado sobre mojado o "alla prima") mientras pinta.

Hello People! I can finally show you how the La Boca painting is doing. She's doing pretty well, actually! Well, I finished it last night. It was a fun painting. Biggest canvas I've ever dealt with. It felt like child's play... and it looks like it, too. That's why I like it. Fun and colorful. It's going on the wall of my entryway as a big and happy "WELCOME"!

Hola gente! Finalmente puedo mostrarles como va la pintura del barrio La Boca. Va bien! La termine anoche. Fue divertido pintarla y es la mas grande que jamas he hecho (vendria a ser de 60 x 60 cm). Me senti como cuando dibujaba de nina, y se ve asi tambien! Por eso me gusta. Es divertida y colorida. La voy a colgar en la pared de la entrada de mi casa a manera de BIENVENIDA!

This is from the day when I painted the light post (I guess it's better to paint something here and there than to wait until I have a large chunk of time to make a ton of progress in a painting!). I think the light post is my favorite part of this painting!

Estas fotos son del dia que pude pintar el farol (me doy cuenta que es mejor pintar algun detallito aqui y alli antes de esperar a tener un monton de tiempo para avanzar mucho en una pintura!). Me parece que el farol es lo que mas me gusta de esta pintura!

Now I need to grab a ladder and get some nails on that wall to hang this painting up. I also need to clean our entryway, since it's full of shoes with sand and salt (some of Wisconsin staples in the winter), hats, coats... and all those things that I've been postponing to do so I could paint! :)

Ahora tengo que ir a agarrar una escalera para poner unos clavos sobre la pared donde la voy a colgar. Tambien necesito limpiar el hall de entrada de mi casa, ya que esta lleno de zapatos con arena y sal (propios del combatir la nieve en el invierno de Wisconsin), sombreros, abrigos... todas esas cositas que he postergado para poder pintar! :)
