Good Evening Gente! Well, today I tried fixing an old painting I did last fall of a colorful display of umbrellas in the city of Agueda, Portugal. My husband lived in Portugal for two years as a missionary for our church before we met, and I wanted to paint something that would remind him of that beautiful country. I found this photograph while doing some online research:
Isn't this a WONDERFUL image? Goodness! All that color, the umbrellas, the line of perspective... I like everything about it! Now, as I said at the beginning, I had to fix it and I worked on that tonight. Last fall, I worked on this painting using only brushes and I was pretty happy with how it was turning out... until the last dark touches. Let me show you some "old" progress:
No les parece una foto ESPECTACULAR? Por favor! Todo ese color, los paraguas, la linea de perspectiva... No hay una cosa que no me guste! Ahora, como les decia al principio, tuve que arreglar la version anterior de esta pintura y eso es lo que hice esta noche. Inicialmente, trabaje en esta pintura usando exclusivamente pinceles y, la verdad, que estaba contenta con como iba progresando... hasta que le agregue las ultimas lineas oscuras. Aca les muestro progreso "de aquella vez":
In my mind, things were going well so far. The sky, the buildings. I was excited.
En mi mente, me parecia que la pintura iba bien. El cielo, los edificios. Estaba "chocha" (diriamos los Argentinos :).
And those first umbrellas just made my heart leap of joy! Boy, was I excited about how this painting was turning out!
Y esos primeros paraguas me crearon tanto gozo que creo que se me paro el corazon un ratito cuando los pinte... de pura alegria! Como les dije "chochera total" con el desarrollo de esta pintura.
And look at this... saaaaaaaad. I added those black lines. They really look aggressive and out of place. They made the rest of the shapes and colors look flat.
Y, miren la que me mande... quedo mal! Le agregue esas lineas negras que parecen agresivas y fuera de lugar. Hicieron que el resto de las formas y los colores se vean chatos y sin dimension.
I got carried away. It happens. Sometimes I start feeling "artsy" and think that no matter what I do (even if it's bold, and even if I have no idea what I'm doing, or what that brush stroke will really look like...) it will look Picasso-ish and awesome. Well, clearly my friends, that wasn't the outcome on this painting. As a result, I felt sad about it for months and just didn't touch it until tonight.
Se me fue la mano. Nos pasa a todos. A veces me empiezo a sentir "re artista" y a pensar que, no importa lo que haga (aun si es medio audaz, aun si no tengo idea de lo que estoy haciendo, aun si no tengo idea de como se va a ver esa pincelada...), se va a ver onda Picasso y espectacular. Bueno, claramente, amigos mios, ese no fue el resultado en esta pintura. El resultado fue que me quede medio triste cuando meti la pata con las lineas negras y no la toque mas hasta esta noche.
With renewed vision (maybe I'll call it just "courage"), I tried fixing it tonight. Some things I needed to address were:
- The umbrellas are quite un-finished. I needed to add another coat of paint on each one of them.
- And those dark lines... they needed to be "tamed"or hidden a bit.
- Aaaaaand, I REALLY wanted to try doing some palette knife touches on it. I will confess: I LOVE the look of paintings done with palette knives. I just do. I love the texture, the mess, the artsiness (if that's a word).
Con una vision renovada (bueno, le voy a llamar simplemente "coraje"), trate de arreglar la pintura esta noche. Estas son algunas de las cosas que tenia en mente:
- Los paraguas necesitaban otra mano de pintura.
- Tenia que disimular un poquito las lineas negras.
- Y, REALMENTE queria probar agregarle unos toques con espatula. Confesion: ME ENCANTAN como se ven las pinturas producidas o acentuadas con espatula. Es simple: me gusta la textura, el toque desprolijo, el "art-ismo" (si fuera una palabra).
So, let me show you tonight's work and humble efforts:

Here I'm adding another coat of paint on each one of the umbrellas. The colors had become a bit transparent and dull.
Aca le estoy agregando otra mano de pintura a los paraguas. Los colores se veian transparentes y necesitaban, en mi opinion, otra mano de pintura.
This is after I had added another coat over all the umbrellas.
Aca se ven los paraguas despues de la segunda mano de pintura.
Aaaaaaand, YAY! Here's my little palette knife and a very excited soul to just add some thick paint on that canvas!!!
Y, YUPIIII! Aca esta mi pequena espatula de pintura y mi alma llena de gozo al contemplar la posibilidad de agregar mucha pintura a la vez sobre el lienzo.
Oh, what a JOY!! Thick paint, bright colors. I was in Heaven.
Oh, que ALEGRIA! Pintura espesa, colores vivos. No podia estar mas feliz yo!
And here's how it's looking so far. I smeared paint over all the umbrellas, AND buildings at the bottom. Used my smallest brush and brown this time (not black) to lightly repaint some umbrella handles that had gotten painted over. Oh, I love this version so much more than the previous one. I actually would like to see this painting hanging on my wall this time. But I'll have to wait. The thick amounts of oil paint I applied will take FOREVER to dry (I just hope my little boys don't feel too curious and touch it while it's fresh this week!).
Y aqui les muestro como va quedando hasta ahora despues de aplicar pintura con espatula sobre los paraguas y los edificios. Use mi pincel mas pequeno y pintura marron (no negra) para pintar con cuidado algunos de los punos de los paraguas que habian desaparecido despues de la segunda mano de pintura. Me gusta esta version mucho mas que la anterior. Hasta pienso que me gustaria colgar esta pintura en casa como se ve ahora. Pero tendre que esperar. Con la cantidad de pintura espesa (sin diluir) que puse va a llevar UNA ETERNIDAD para secarse (espero que mis pequenitos no se pongan muy curiosos y quieran tocarla esta semana mientras esta fresca!).
Now, I'm opening my heart to possible harsh criticism here. What do you think? Did you like it better before, or a little later (but before the palette knife additions), or LATER-later (as in after all the thick paint was applied)?
Ahora, abro mi corazon a la posible critica de aquellos que no piensen como yo. Que te parece la pintura? Te gustaba mas antes, o un poquito despues (pero aun antes de los agregados con espatula), o al final?
